A New Line from Rome to London: Publishing the Letters of Charles Willes Wilshere to Giovanni Battista de Rossi

I am currently employed part-time as Project Research Assistant to Dr Susan Walker through funding kindly offered by The Leverhulme Trust and Wolfson College, University of Oxford. The research team is led by Dr Susan Walker (Honorary Curator and former Sackler Keeper of Antiquities, Ashmolean Museum, and Emeritus Fellow, Wolfson College, University of Oxford), me, and include Monsignor Professor Dr Stefan Heid, Director of the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology (Pontificio Istituto di Archeologia Cristiana), Rome.

This project builds on the Ashmolean Museum publication titled The Wilshere Collection of gold-glass, sarcophagi and inscriptions from Rome and Southern Italy, edited by Dr Susan Walker with contributions by Professor Sean Leatherbury, Dr David Rini, and others (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2017), in which excerpts from Wilshere-de Rossi correspondence were principally used to follow the formation of Wilshere’s collection of early Christian and Jewish antiquities from Rome and southern Italy. Now their wider historical and intellectual context will be considered.
